Weisbart Springer Hayes Secures a “Top Verdict” for 2014

By Weisbart Springer Hayes

AUSTIN, Texas – The Austin-based litigation firm Weisbart Springer Hayes has been recognized for winning the second largest antitrust verdict in Texas courts last year. The case is highlighted in “Top Texas Verdicts of 2014,” an annual publication compiled by the legal reporting service Verdict Search and distributed in the May 25th edition of Texas Lawyer newspaper.

Firm partner Geoff Weisbart represented the Texas Collegiate Baseball League in securing a $2.9 million verdict against Fred “Britt” Britton of Colleyville, Texas for participating in an unlawful conspiracy to boycott the league with several other team owners in 2007. That boycott ultimately forced the TCBL to cease operations. The league reached out-of-court settlements with the other owners prior to the trial.

On May 2, 2014, after a one-week trial in Judge Donald Cosby’s 67th District Court in Tarrant County, the jury returned a verdict finding that there was an illegal group boycott that violated antitrust laws, and awarded more than $850,000, plus attorneys’ fees, to the TCBL. The jury also found that Mr. Britton’s conduct in the group boycott was flagrant, causing the amount of damages to be tripled, bringing the total damage award to $2.9 million in a final judgment issued on June 6.

“It was an honor to try this case for the TCBL, and we were thrilled with the outcome for our client,” says Mr. Weisbart.  “We are proud that this case has been recognized as one of the top verdicts in Texas for 2014.”
