Matt Wood Receives Award for Community Service

By Weisbart Springer Hayes

For the second time, firm lawyer Matt C. Wood has been recognized with the Covington Pro Bono Service Award from Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas (VLS). VLS is a local nonprofit that connects low-income residents in Central Texas with lawyers willing to provide pro bono legal services.

Each year this award is given by VLS to celebrate attorneys who devoted the greatest amount of time and effort to providing pro bono legal services in the community, exemplifying the legacy of former Travis County Judge Suzanne Covington.

Mr. Wood has represented a number of VLS clients in matters ranging from divorce proceedings to consumer litigation. He most recently donated hundreds of volunteer hours to represent an indigent client who had been defrauded by a homebuilder and lost her life savings as a result. Mr. Wood successfully represented the client at trial and obtained a substantial judgment in her favor, fought to preserve the judgment in bankruptcy court, and ultimately secured a favorable settlement for the client.

Collectively, this year’s VLS award winners provided more than 15,000 hours of legal counsel to thousands of Central Texans and more than $160,000 to support VLS’s mission.
